This fuse is used with the Smine 35 (via a bridge) & usually in groups of 9 each side of the bridge. This gives the potential of 18 opportunities to detonate the mine rather than just via the usual SMiZ35 3 prong fuse. Minefields can then employ less mines but more chances of activation.

This sensor seems to have been the last one the string of nine, as it has wires on one side only. It doesn't appear that they have ever been on the other side.

The 3 prongs are a "push fit" onto the top of the fuse. The threads at the top are to retain the bakelite cover. Pressure on the fuse shatters 2 small ampoules & the mix forms an electric current that fires the detonater in the bridge itself.

The fuse is very similar to the SMiZ35 3 prong fuse. Much shorter though.

The Sm35 fitted with the bridge. The wires (missing from this fuse unfortunately) terminate in "banana" type plugs that push into the red & black sockets on the bridge.

At right, the ESMiZ40 fuse as it would be ready to be pushed into the ground. The wires would come from the left edge (old "fluffy" wire end just visible) & plug into the bridge.
